There are, at last count, about 7 different FAQs on the Net right now, and I've recently seen a few more random ones popping up on Usenet. Hmm...I wonder which one EGM will use... Well, I'm not getting into the FAQ wars. I'm just going to keep on writing mine, and those of you who like it, great! If you choose to use another, then that's fine too. No matter what, we'll all end up with a better, more enjoyable gaming experience. And isn't that what we're all here for? Many moves have changed in this revision; it looks like Release Version 1.0 is hitting many arcades now. Hopefully, we'll get that here soon, eh Fenris4? :) Note: Any unconfirmed moves, fatalities, etc. are marked with a (?). There are also a few moves which have been described as two different motions. If anyone can tell me which movements are korrect, then you'll get credit and many many thanks! Also, it looks as though the fatalities are getting a little complicated. Check them out, but be forewarned: some of the new ones are still uncomfirmed! P.S.: I fixed a few typos too; namely Kano's moves and fatalities were a little mixed up in the last few FAQs...sorry about that, I guess I'll have to proofread a little better next time! ******************************************************************************** -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kontents -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Terminology Kommon Attacks The Kombatants Secret Kombatants Non-Playable Kombatants Kombos Points of Interest Kredits and Thanks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Terminology -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** Motions ** HP - High Punch LP - Low Punch b - Block HK - High Kick LK - Low Kick R - Run U - Up D - Down B - Back F - Forward This is what the controller looks like with your Kombatant facing right: U HP HK O O O O O \|/ b B O--O--O F O /|\ O O O O O D LP LK O R -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kommon Attacks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** General Attacks ** Here are attacks that are common to all Kombatants. Face Punch: High Punch Body Punch: Low Punch Face Kick: High Kick Body Kick: Low Kick Jump Punch: Jump (Up, Up & Forward, Up & Back) & High or Low Punch Jump Kick: Jump (Up, Up & Forward, Up & Back) & High or Low Kick Uppercut: Down & High Punch Crouch Punch: Down & Low Punch Roundhouse Kick: Back & High Kick Leg Sweep: Back & Low Kick Crouch Kick(High): Down & High Kick Crouch Kick(Low): Down & Low Kick Specialty Punch: High Punch (when against opponent) Knee: High or Low Kick (when against opponent) Throw: Forward & Low Punch (must be next to opponent) ** Stage Fatalities ** With the newest ROM chips, there are several Kombat Zones in which you may kill your opponent by making him/her interact with the background. I will refrain from describing them and let you see them for yourself. You will love them, I guarantee! To kill your opponent on The Pit 3, the Subway, or Shao Kahn's Tower: Forward - Forward - Forward - Run [do this when standing against the opponent] (Remember not to uppercut your opponent on the Subway!) ** Mercy ** Instead of killing your opponent, you can give them a little extra energy (so you can beat them again! Excellent!). This is necessary if you want to do your Animality on the victim. See the Kombatants section for more info on the Animalities. Showing mercy on your opponent is only possible in the third round. To show mercy: Down - Down - Down - Down - Run [may be done anywhere on the screen] * Note: Some people have found that it is not possible to do this within attacking distance of the opponent. Presumably, this is due to the fact that it would be far too easy to beat the opponent again after showing mercy. ** Generic Animality ** All characters, according to Druboy, may perform this animality. Unfortunately, he did not include the actual description of the Animality. This leads me to believe that he may have made this up. But you never know... To do the generic animality: Down - Down - Down - Run [may be done anywhere on the screen] * Note: You MUST show mercy before the Animality! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Kombatants -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This section contains all pertinent information for each character: his/her attract mode bio, special moves, and various finishing moves. The finishing moves include a brief description, as well as info on where to do them. The distance to perform a finishing move (fatality, animality, etc.) is in brackets [] immediately after the joystick movement is given. If no distance is given, assume you may be anywhere on the screen. Any move which has not been confirmed is noted by a (?). Note: In order to perform an Animality on a victim, you must be in the third round and have had Mercy on your victim. To perform a Friendship or Babality, you must only use kicks to attack your opponent in the final round (second or third). (This is an assumption, since it was like that in MK II.) ** Shang Tsung ** Volcanic Eruption: Forward - Back - Back - Low Kick Fireballs: 1: Back - Back - High Punch 2: Back - Back - Forward - High Punch 3: Back - Back - Forward - Forward - High Punch Morphs: Sindel: Back - Down - Back - Low Punch Jax: Forward - Forward - Down - Low Punch Kano: Forward - Back - Forward - Block Liu Kang: Circle Joystick (like Liu's old Fat.) She then runs away, leaving her victim spinning helplessly as all of his limbs fly off in different directions) Animality: Forward - Forward - High Punch (Sindel morphs into a purple wasp, grabs her victim, and flies off the screen as she stings her victim to death) Friendship: Babality: ** Jax ** After failing to convince his superiors of the Outworld menace, Jax begins to covertly prepare for the future battle with Kahn's minions. He fits both arms with indestructible implants. This is a war Jax is prepared to win. Single Missile: Back - Back - Forward - High Punch Double Missile: Forward - Forward - Back - High Punch Shoulder Slam: Forward - Forward - High Kick Gotcha Punch: Forward - Forward - Low Punch Gotcha Throw: Throw - Tap High Punch Back Breaker: Block (in air) (It's back! Instead, he is found alive in the Outworld where he again escapes capture by Sonya. Before the actual Outworld invasion, Kano convinces Shao Kahn to spare his soul... After returning to Earth, she and Jax try to warn the U.S. Government of the looming Outworld menace. Lacking proof, they watch helplessly as Shao Kahn begins his invasion. Rings: Down - Forward - Low Punch Bicycle Kick: Back - Back - Down - Low Kick Square Wave Punch: Forward - Back - High Punch Leg Grab: Down & Low Punch & Block Fatality 1: Down - Down - Down - Forward - Low Kick (any distance) (Sonya blows a fatal kiss to her victim) Fatality 2: Animality: Hold Low Punch - Back - Back - Forward - Forward - Rel. Low Punch [jump distance] (Sonya morphs into a hawk) Friendship: Babality: ** Stryker ** When the Outworld portal opens up over a large city in North America, panic and chaos rage out of control. Kurtis Stryker was the leader of the riot control brigade when Shao Kahn began taking souls. He finds himself the lone survivor of a city once populated by millions. Long Grenade: Forward - Down - Back - High Punch Short Grenade: Forward - Down - Back - Low Punch Riot Klub Throw: Forward - Forward - High Kick Riot Klub Trip: Forward - Back - Low Punch Fatality 1: Down - Forward - Down - Forward - Block [next to opp.] (Stryker turns his back to the players, and upon turning back around, reveals a time bomb strapped to his victim's chest and holds his ears as the victim explodes) Fatality 2: Forward - Forward - Forward - Low Kick [screen distance] (Stryker shoots a cattle prod at his opponent, electrocuting them) Animality: Friendship: Babality: ** Sub-Zero ** The ninja returns unmasked. Betrayed by his own clan, the Lin Kuei, he broke sacred codes of honor by leaving his clan and is marked for death. But, unlike the ninja, his pursuers come as machines. He must not only defend the Outworld menace, but he must also elude his soulless assassins. Ice Ball: Down - Forward - Low Punch Ice Shower: Down - Forward - High Punch Ice Klones: Down - Back - Low Punch Slide: Back & Low Punch & Block & Low Kick Fatality 1: Down - Forward - Back - High Kick [sweep dist.] (Sub-Zero blows mist at his victim, which freezes the opponent, who then falls backward and crumbles) Fatality 2: Down - Forward - Down - Forward - Block [next to opp.] (Sub-Zero picks his opponent up high over his head. The victim then freezes just before Sub-Zero breaks him in half) Animality: Up - Up - Up [next to opp.] (Sub-Zero morphs into a polar bear and proceeds to mangle his victim) * This move could possibly just be two "Ups." Check it out, someone! Friendship: Babality: ** Cyrax ** Cyrax is unit LK-44, the second of three prototype cybernetic ninjas built by the Lin Kuei. ...his last program command is to find and terminate Sub-Zero. Net Kapture: Back - Back - Low Kick Exploding Teleport: Forward - Down - Block Long Grenade Throw: Hold Low Kick - Forward - Forward - High Kick Short Grenade Throw: Hold Low Kick - Back - Back - High Kick Air Throw: (?) Block - Run [sweep distance] (Cyrax self destructs, killing his opponent in the process) Animality: Friendship: Babality: ** Sektor ** Sektor is actually the code name for unit LK-929. He was the first of three prototype cybernetic ninjas built by the Lin Kuei. Sektor was once a human assassin trained by the Lin Kuei. He volunteered for automation because of his loyalty to the clan. Sektor survives the Outworld invasion because he has no soul to take. Heat Seeker: Forward - Down - Back - High Punch Straight Missle: Forward - Forward - Low Punch Teleport: Forward - Forward - Low Kick (can be done in air, too) Fatality 1: Back - Back - Back - High Kick [sweep distance] (Sektor's chest opens up to reveal a large crushing machine, which then smashes the victim) Fatality 2: Animality: Friendship: Babality: ** Night Wolf ** Works as a historian and preserver of his people's culture. When Kahn's portal opens over North America, Nightwolf uses the magic of his shamen to protect his tribe's sacred land. This area becomes a vital threat to Kahn's invasion of the Earth. Axe Uppercut: Back - Down - Forward - High Punch Shoot Arrow: Forward - Down - Back - Low Punch Shield Aura: Forward - Forward - Forward - High Kick Shoulder Slam: Forward - Forward - Forward - Low Kick Fatality 1: Down - Forward - Forward - High Kick [next to opp.] (Night Wolf summons the magic of his shaman to use the light of the moon to disintegrate his victim) Fatality 2: Back - Back - Back - High Punch [jump distance] (Night Wolf raises his axe to the heavens, it is struck by lightning, and then he casts the lightning at his victim) Animality: Hold Block - Down - Down - Down [sweep distance] (Night Wolf morphs into a wolf and attacks his victim... big surprise!) It is believed he is a survivor of an attack by Shao Kahn's extermination squads. As a result, he is viciously scarred, kept alive only by artificial respirators and a rage for an end to Shao Kahn's conquest. Purple Fireball: Back - Back - High Punch (may also be done in air) Tornado Spin: Back - Forward - Low Kick Ground Razor: Back - Back - Back - Run Fatality 1: Back - Back - Forward - Down - Block [sweep distance] (Kabal removes his respirator and inflates his victim's head, sending him/her floating off the screen before it bursts) Fatality 2: ????? Animality: Hold High Punch - Down - Down - Down - Rel. High Punch (Kabal morphs into a rhinoceros skeleton and gores his victim) Friendship: Babality: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Secret Kombatants -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -= Getting to Them =- ** Jade ** ** Smoke ** Smoke is the third Robo-ninja! He appears in the middle box on the Kombatant selection screen and is only selectable using Random Select. According to some posts (this is still not confirmed), the selector box must land on the center box *before* Smoke revolves into view. Note that Smoke only appears sometimes, rumored to be after every five matches or so. ** Noob Saibot ** Noob is no longer a ninja. He is now a shadow of Kano! So far the only way to fight Noob Saibot is to enter six Raidens on the Vs. Screen Boxes. Then the winner of the first round will fight Noob. Good luck! -= Playing Them =- ** Jade ** ** Smoke ** Fork/Spear Throw: Back - Back - Low Punch (Yes, Scorpion fans, it's back!) It is also rumored that Smoke can disappear, similar to Reptile in MK2. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Non-Playable Kombatants -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** Motaro ** Motaro is the half-man-half-horse Boss. He is the next-to-last Boss; you fight him before going on to fight Shao Kahn. Motaro is a Centaur, which is a mythological half-man-half-horse being. He has three horns. Scoot Sanborn also describes him as a "Minotaur," but I think he was confused. He has a metal tail which is used to trip his opponent with, can shoot numerous fireballs, reflects projectiles, and even has a grab similar to Goro's old one; he picks his opponent up with one hand and uses the other to smack the Kombatant across the screen. Several people have been able to beat him using Liu Kang and his Low Dragon Fire. This appears to be some sort of bug. ** Shao Kahn ** Shao Kahn is once again the master of the tournament. His new moves include a green fireball that comes from his head (apparently his green arrow was taken out), a dizzying sledgehammer hit (he taunts you while you are dizzy), and a shadow knee move similar to his old shadow shoulder smash. Kahn taunts his mortal opponent with sayings like "Still trying to win?" etc. Several people have said he is not very difficult to beat. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kombos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, some of the individual kombos are blatantly taken straight from Matt Kruse. I have neither the time nor the money to check each of these out, so use them at your own risk. Actually, they probably work, but I really can't explain them very well. The kombos are listed with the notation used above (i.e., Roundhouse Kick means Back & High Kick). See the Kommon Attacks section for more info. -= General =- -= Individual =- ** Shang Tsung ** Low Kick - High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch - Roundhouse Kick ** Sindel ** High Kick - High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch - High Kick ** Jax ** High Punch - High Punch - Block - Low Punch - Roundhouse Kick ** Kano ** High Punch - High Punch - High Kick - Low Kick - Roundhouse Kick High Punch - High Punch - Crouch Punch - Jump Kick - Air Throw Jump Kick - Flying Kannonball - Jump Kick - Knife Uppercut ** Liu Kang ** High Punch - Low Kick - Low Kick - High Punch - Low Kick High Punch - High Punch - Block - Low Kick - Low Kick - High Kick - Low Kick ** Sonya ** High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch - Back & High Punch ** Stryker ** High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch Low Kick - High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch ** Sub-Zero ** High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch - Leg Sweep - Roundhouse Kick - Roundhouse Kick High Kick - High Kick Run - High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch - Low Kick - High Kick - Roundhouse Kick ** Cyrax ** High Punch - High Punch - Low Kick - Low Punch High Punch - High Punch - High Kick ** Sektor ** High Punch - High Punch - Low Kick - Low Punch High Punch - High Punch - High Kick ** Night Wolf ** High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch - Axe Uppercut High Punch - High Punch - Axe Uppercut - High Punch - Shoulder Smash ** Sheeva ** High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch - Forward & High Punch Low Kick - High Kick - High Kick - Leg Sweep ** Kung Lao ** High Punch - Low Punch - High Punch - Low Punch - Low Kick - Low Kick - Roundhouse Kick ** Kabal ** High Punch - High Punch - Uppercut - Jump Kick - Purple Fireball Tornado Spin - Low Kick - Low Kick - High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch - Jump Kick - Purple Fireball Run - Low Kick - High Punch - High Punch - Uppercut - Jump Kick (w/ Low Kick) - Purple Fireball ** Jade ** ** Smoke ** -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Points of Interest -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** The Vs. Screen Boxes ** On the two player "Vs." screen that appears before each battle, six boxes are displayed on the bottom of the screen. The three boxes on the left are controlled by player one, and likewise the three boxes on the right are controlled by player two. Various symbols appear in these boxes, and can be changed by pressing the button corresponding to each box. Different combinations of symbols give different attributes for the battle, such as no throwing, handicapping, etc. The boxes are controlled like this: the Low Punch button controls the leftmost box for the player. That is, player one's Low Punch button changes the symbol in the box on the far left, and player two's Low Punch button changes the symbol in the fourth box from the left. Block changes the symbol in each player's center box, and low kick controls each player's rightmost box. Here are the possible symbols (in order of appearance): MK Dragon Symbol MK Yin Yang 3 <-- The new logo ? Lightning Bolt Goro Raiden Shao Kahn Skull ** You may also hold Up on the joystick and press the button. This reverses the order of the symbols. Here are some of the combinations of symbols and the attributes they produce in battle: - Random Kombat - ? - ? - ? - ? - ? - ? This causes the Kombatants to morph into *other* Kombatants every few seconds. There is no control over the morphing. What a feature! - Winner Fights ... - There are several "kombinations" that will allow the winner of the first round to fight certain other Kombatants. The loser of the first round must continue if he wants to play after the winner fights the specified Kombatant. Another cool feature. The Winner Fights Kombinations are: Six Raidens - Fight Noob Saibot Six Goros - Fight Shao Kahn Six Lightning Bolts - Fight Motaro * Note: These combinations may have changed for the newest version. If they have, then someone please tell me! ** Random Select ** Selecting a character at random is again possible in MK3. It is performed just as in MK2, by holding up on the joystick and pressing start. Remember to have your selection box in its original position when doing this, or it won't work. ** Galaga ** Similar to Mortal Kombat II, there is a "classic" video game included in Mortal Kombat 3. No, it's not Pong Kombat, it's Galaga, the classic shooting game where your ship can be picked up by the enemy, and then reclaimed later in the game. After reaching Battle 100 in a two player match, both players begin to play Galaga with three ships each. After one person loses all three ships, Kombat resumes. It is rumored that it is possible to go straight to Galaga by entering this kombination on the Vs. Screen Boxes: Skull - Skull - Skull - Yin Yang - Goro - Skull Again, this is only a rumor. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kredits and Thanks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Andy Eddy ................................................
